WHAT IS THE METASCHOLAR DIGITAL OBJECT INFRASTRUCTURE (MDOI) FOUNDATION?

Metascholar Digital Object Infrastructure (MDOI) Foundation is an independent persistent identifier and metadata infrastructure designed to support the registration, discovery, verification, and long-term accessibility of scholarly, institutional, and public-interest digital resources. MDOI identifiers are independent persistent identifiers and are not DOI® identifiers issued under the DOI Foundation system.

Try resolving an MDOI name

Type or paste a known MDOI exactly, including its prefix and suffix, then submit to resolve it.

mdoi.org/

Example: 110.0014/abc.2026.00001

How it works: Each MDOI is structured as two parts: a numeric prefix (e.g. 110.0014) and a unique item suffix, joined by /.

When you prepend mdoi.org/, the identifier becomes a resolvable URL that forwards users to the current resource destination.

What is an MDOI?

An MDOI, meaning Metascholar Digital Object Infrastructure, is an independent persistent identifier and metadata system designed to give digital resources a stable, unique, and verifiable identity. It helps researchers, institutions, publishers, repositories, and organisations register, manage, cite, track, and preserve access to digital objects over time.

A digital object may include a journal article, thesis, dissertation, dataset, book chapter, conference paper, report, policy document, institutional record, learning material, software output, or archived digital resource.

In simple terms, an MDOI works as a permanent identity system for digital resources. Even when the original website link changes, the MDOI record can be updated so users can still find and verify the resource.

Why Should Institutions Trust MDOI?

Institutions can trust MDOI because it is built around persistent identification, metadata governance, controlled registration, record updating, and long-term resource accessibility. Once an MDOI is created, the destination URL can be updated while the identifier remains the same, which helps prevent broken academic and institutional links.

Who can register identifiers?

Both organisations and individuals can register identifiers.

Can I make an item private?

Yes. You can set visibility to Private for supported deposit types.

How can developers integrate it?

Developers can connect MDOI to repositories, journal systems, research portals, and institutional platforms through APIs for identifier registration, metadata submission, record updates, resolution, search, and export.
